Recommended pianist for weddings

Hi! My name is Adam Hughes and I am a wedding pianist based in London, now taking bookings for 2012, 2013 and beyond.
I mainly perform at parties and weddings as I have a very wide range of repertoire that is suitable for almost any group of guests. My repertoire includes everything from laid back cocktail piano jazz – Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, to classical or pop.
As I have been performing as a solo pianist for more than 12 years, I would say I have a lot of experience dealing with specific requests from couples. I am happy to write to custom arrangements of favourite songs to perform on the day, and always welcome ideas and opportunities to explore new repertoire.
New! I have just started a brand new Pianist Blog
(personal blog of wedding piano player Adam Hughes). Please stop by and say hello!
Wedding ceremonies
Before the ceremony, I tend to play for about 15 minutes leading up to the entrance of the bride. From experience as a pianist for wedding ceremonies, Light classical music or jazz works very well pre-ceremony. Brides sometimes like to request a favourite song that they know their groom would like to hear as a surprise before the ceremony.
When the bridal party enter I often perform the traditional “here comes the bride”, but recently I was asked to play “don’t stop me now”! Other memorable requests include “I would do anything for you” and “I’ve got a crush on you”.
Hymns
If your service includes hymns, please give me as much notice as possible so I can locate the sheet music. A lot of churches have sheet music copies of hymns available – please request this is possible to save time.
Signing of the registers
During the signing of the registers most people have some light background music for which classical or jazz are the most common choices.
Music for the exit
During the exit it is traditional to have a triumphant sounding piece of music such as Widor’s Toccata, or Trumpet Voluntary in D. Again if you prefer a special song of any style I am more than happy to arrange this.
After the ceremony music
Once the ceremony has finished it is traditional to have drinks – Pimms is a popular choice! During this time I often perform a jazz set consisting of popular jazz standards by artists such as Frank Sinatra, Cole Porter, Gershwin etc.
Music for the wedding breakfast
- During the meal your guests will probably want to talk a lot, so live music isn’t always the best idea.
- An iPod can be a good choice to give some low level ambience.
- If you do decide to book a pianist for the wedding breakfast, classical or jazz music is a good choice as it is not too intrusive.

Common Questions
I’ve compiled a list of the more common questions I get asked to help you when booking a wedding piano player. If you haven’t chosen your wedding music yet, you may find wedding music samples (http://www.weddingmusicsamples.co.uk) useful – you can see suggestions of popular wedding music.
I don't have a piano, is that a problem!?

Sorry for the slightly bad quality – I took this on my phone at a recent wedding!
Will your keyboard sound like a real piano?
What will the pianist require?
- Changing room / “Green room” (if possible)
- Refreshments – soft drinks & food appropriate to the time of day (e.g. sandwiches for afternoon / for evening a hot meal is appropriate)
- Standard 13A UK power socket (not required if an acoustic piano is being supplied)
- Parking – most of the time venues have a car park that you can reserve spaces in if you ask the venue (nicely!) in advance, or there may be free street parking nearby. If not, the cost of parking the pianists vehicle in the closest public car park will be added.
How much space do they need?
(Piano Shell for Keyboard)
Can you move the keyboard / set up outside?
When will the pianist arrive?
Can the pianist play suitable wedding songs on an iPod or CD during the breaks?
Can my friend join in!?
Can my child play chopsticks during the drinks reception!?
What songs will you play before the ceremony?
Do you ever substitute pianists?
Will my wedding pianist be heard?
Will my wedding pianist be too loud for us to talk over?
Why do I need to supply food?
Can we see you play before we book?
